In two days it is 250 years since Ludwig van Beethoven was born (he was baptised 17th December, exact birthday is not known). To celebrate his work, here is something to listen to.
Symphonies. Complete symphonies e.g. by Arturo Toscanini (an unsurpassed historical reference), George Szell (better recorded than Toscanini), Stanislaw Skrowaczewski or Günter Wand if digital recordings are required. Herbert Blomstedt (Staatskapelle Dresden) for fantastically played, very good late analogue recordings. Singleton performances:
1st: Günter Wand, Fritz Reiner, Igor Markevitch or Arturo Toscanini
2nd: Rudolf Kempe, Günter Wand or Franz Konwitschny
3rd: Otto Klemperer, Rudolf Kempe, Erich Kleiber, Arturo Toscanini, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Carl Schuricht
4th: Wilhelm Furtwängler, Pablo Casals, Bruno Walter, George Szell, Herbert Blomstedt
5th: Wilhelm Furtwängler, George Szell, Herbert von Karajan, Carlos Kleiber
6th: Bruno Walter, Erich Kleiber, Arturo Toscanini
7th: Erich Kleiber, George Szell, Arturo Toscanini, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Michael Gielen
8th: Herbert von Karajan, Günter Wand, Igor Markevitch
9th: Wilhelm Furtwängler, Jascha Horenstein, Arturo Toscanini, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Herbert von Karajan, George Szell, Hermann Abendroth, Herbert Blomstedt
Piano concerti: Wilhelm Kempff/Paul van Kempen. Also Claudio Arrau/Bernard Haitink, Leon Fleisher/George Szell, Murray Perahia/Bernard Haitink. Edwin Fischer/Wilhelm Furtwängler for Emperor concerto.
Violin concert: Fritz Kreisler/Leo Blech. Unsurpassed wit and charm, but archaic recording.
Piano sonatas (complete): Arthur Schnabel. The ultimate historial reference. There are loads of other great sets: Wilhelm Kempff, Claudio Arrau, Annie Fischer, Alfred Brendel, Yves Nat. Late sonatas by Solomon. Appasionata by Svjatoslav Richter.
Diabelli variations: Svjatoslav Richter. No one comes even close.
Violin sonati: Yehudi Menuhin/Wilhelm Kempff or Arthur Grumiaux/Clara Haskil.
Cello sonati: Jacqueline du Pré/Daniel Barenboim
Piano trios: Daniel Barenboim/Pinchas Zukerman/Jacqueline du Pré. Try nro 5 in D "Ghost". The most intensely recorded piece of chamber music you will be likely to find.
String quartets. The Hungarian Quartet. The middle quartets (Razumovskys) and the late ones from no 1 onwards are some of the greatest pieces of human invention. Also the Talich Quartet and Busch Quartet recordings offer invaluable insights. Great sets are also Vegh Quartet and Quartetto Italiano.
Missa Solemnis. Jascha Horenstein or Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
